Updating from old version of Stacker to the new version of Stacker

If you're using an old version of Stacker, you might see a banner asking you to update to the new version of Stacker. When you update to the new version, you'll be able to access new features and functionality without changing anything for your users. 

Questions

Which versions of Stacker are there, and which one am I using?
  • Stacker Classic - Old version of Stacker. This is the version we are in the process of updating to Stacker Workspace.
  • Stacker Workspace - Stacker Workspace is newest version of Stacker, where all apps are a part of a Workspace. There are 3 versions of apps depending on when you were updated.
    • Workspace apps - This is the most up-to-date version of Stacker. Every new app you create will automatically be on this version. Applications have banner in the Users Modal that say “This app has new user login features”.
    • Updated apps - Apps that are updated from Stacker Classic which retains features from Stacker Classic with an updated admin UI. Updated apps have a banner in the Users Modal that say “This app was updated from Stacker Classic.”
    • Customer Access apps - A version of Stacker that served as a stepping stone between Stacker Classic and Stacker. You will sometimes see it referred to in the community.
What features are included in Stacker Workspace?

The newest version of Stacker has new admin features and functionality that will let you build better apps. Here are some of them:

  • Access all your apps from your Stacker Workspace
    When you update, all the apps in your account will become a part of a Stacker Workspace. From there you'll be able to manage all your existing apps, create new ones. You'll be able to share the new apps privately with your teammates, or publish them for the rest of the company.
  • New data sources
    Alongside Airtable and Google Sheets, you can also connect Stripe, Intercom, and SQL databases through Postgres.
  • Link records through Stacker
    Stacker now lets you create links between records from different data sources. This means that you can click into a customer record from your Airtable and see all the linked records from other data sources. For example, recent conversations from Intercom, or the total amount of payments they've made in Stripe. You can also create lookup and roll-up fields directly in Stacker.
  • New user and permission settings
    With the new and improved roles and permissions system, you can have better control over your data.
    • Invite your colleagues to the app via email
    • Manage roles for your team members
    • Preview your apps as any of your users
  • Action buttons, tabs, and delete
    You will be able to use action buttons, delete records within Stacker, and add detail page tabs to better organize your data.
What impact does updating from Stacker Classic to Updated Apps have on people using the application and people building the application?
For people using the application (e.g. end-users):
  • Updated apps, applications that are updated from Stacker Classic, will experience no change to their user’s experience. Your users will need to access your apps using the same link they've always used, and there shouldn't be any interruption to your Stacker apps.

For people building your app (e.g. Admins) 

  • Your Admin URL and login experience will change
  • You will also have access to new functionality
Will there be an increased cost for me or my business? 

No there's no cost to upgrade. The pricing structure of the Stacker Workspace diverges from the pricing structure of Stacker Classic in two key areas.

    1. The Starter plan includes 1 app, the Plus plan 3 apps, and the Pro plan unlimited apps. If you currently subscribe to multiple apps, you'll receive a reduction in your bill when you upgrade to the Pro plan.
    2. The new pricing plans include additional charges for Collaborator Seats – formerly called Stacker Admins. 1 Seat is included in the Starter plan, 3 in Plus, 10+ on Pro, higher numbers on Enterprise plans.
How do I update? 

When you open your Stacker Classic app you'll see an update banner:

Click the Update button and follow the steps to update.

Why do I have to create a Workspace name and URL to update?  

Stacker classic apps don't have a Workspace. With Stacker Workspace, all your apps are a part of a Workspace. The Workspace name is used to generate the Workspace URL where you'll access all your apps.

There will be no change for your users. For example, if your users currently access an app called 'Users Portal' at usersportal.my.stacker.app, they will continue to use that URL.

When you update you will create a new workspace called MyCompanyWorkspace and generate a URL, in this case mycompanyworkspace.stackerhq.com.

Your app 'Users Portal' will be found in your new workspace, along with any other apps you create.

How long does it take to update? 

The update will take less than a minute – and then you'll be up-and-running the Updated App.

Will all of my apps be updated? 

Yes. All of the apps linked to your Stacker account will be updated and placed in a Workspace. 

What happens to my custom domains? 

If you use a Custom Domain for your Stacker Classic app, your users will still access the app as before using that custom domain.

The workspace will be created at a new Workspace URL. This is where you will log in and manage the app, and your users don't need to know about it.

If you want to transfer the custom domain you previously used for an App to a Workspace, you'll need to remove the custom domain from the App first.

What is the difference between my Workspace apps and Updated apps?
  • Updated Apps have a different admin experience, feature availability, and end-user experience to other Stacker Workspace applications, that is Workspace Apps and Customer Access Apps.
  • This is because applications updated from Stacker Classic were made to bring you the benefits of improvements we have made to Stacker (Workspaces, multiple data sources) whilst giving you the features you used and enjoyed in Stacker Classic, that we have yet to bring into general availability for all Stacker applications.
  • Open Sign Up and Sharing Links are only available in Updated Apps. They are not yet made available for Workspace Apps in Stacker. We know how useful these features are and we are working on providing everyone the opportunity to use them.
  • The end-user experience is also slightly different for Workspace and Updated Apps. For example, Workspace App users log in at the Workspace URL or Stacker Central, while Stacker Classic and Updated app users log in at the App URL.
